Micron Technology announced on Thursday that it plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade into a new research laboratory located at its headquarters in Boise, Idaho. The facility aims to drive the development of next-generation memory technologies, build advanced compute systems, and support upcoming semiconductor manufacturing efforts across the globe.

The massive investment arrives during a period of unprecedented expansion for the memory industry, fueled by the global surge in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Demand has skyrocketed for high-bandwidth memory, which acts as a crucial pipeline feeding massive volumes of data directly to AI accelerators. Industry leaders including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have similarly seen record growth as tech companies race to construct specialized datacenters capable of handling demanding AI workloads.

According to the official statement from the company, “Micron Research Labs will bring together customers, academia, government and the broader semiconductor ecosystem to pursue breakthroughs”. The new facility will not operate in isolation, instead, it will link directly with Micron’s existing technology footprint spanning the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan.

This new project complements the broader manufacturing push supported by federal policies. The Trump administration has prioritized domestic chip manufacturing in a bid to reduce foreign dependence, boost the economic output and maintain its lead in the AI race. Micron noted that this $10 billion commitment builds on top of more than $250 billion that the company had separately committed to manufacturing and research across the U.S.

Construction on the Boise campus is scheduled to start soon. Micron expects to break ground on the facility in 2027, which will be capable of hosting hundreds of researchers and facilitating international conferences and workshops. Once completed, the center will serve as a central hub for researchers and engineers seeking to push the limits of memory density and speed required for future computing demands.
